Men's Journal GROOMING:
How to Save Face
|
Each decade, the experts warn us, another 2 to 3 percent of it (the ozone layer)
disappears, leaving us that much more vulnerable to the damaging effects of UV
rays, marring us with crow's-feet and age spots, and contributing to 1.5 million
cases of skin cancer in the U.S. every year...In general, the Skin Cancer Foundation
advises looking for a sunscreen that has an SPF of at least 15, to shield you
from the long-feared UVB rays, as well as Parsol 1789, titanium dioxide, or zinc
oxide, any of which will fend off the UVA rays that are incrasingly beaming through
the ozone. The more albino-like among us may want to opt for an SPF of 30, 45,
or even higher. BurnOut
Ocean Tested Sunblock, SPF 32 Water-resistant
sunscreen works about as well as a water-resistant tent - for REAL PROTECTION,
you need waterPROOF. This favorite of West Coast surfers uses polymers and titanium
dioxide to help it cling to you even after you get a drubbing in the wash. -David

SKIN
DEEP If you're not careful,
the sun can wreak more havoc on your skin than MTV's Spring Break does to the
beaches of Cancun.
STEP ONE: Fend off free radicals. No,
this is not a political statement. They're the charged molecules (formed from
UV rays) which attack healthy cells, damaging collagen and elastin, and eventually
causing wrinkles. "The skin has protective antioxidants that try to neutralize
free radicals," explains Linda K. Franks, an associate professor of dermatology
at New York University. But when the free radicals overload the system (such as
when you don't use sunblock) the protective mechanisms are over-ridden. Eat your
fruits and vegetables (which contain antioxidants) and always use a sunscreen
that blocks UVA and UVB rays. BurnOut Sunblock does both. -Women's

sweat-proof, bong-proof, and non-pore-clogging formula is available in SPF 32.

Swimmer STUFF:
SCREENING THE SUN A shady proposition
| | ENVIRONMENTAL
SCIENTIST KEVIN DUNN
spent several years surfing around the world in search of the perfect wave. Given
his family history of the deadly skin cancer melanoma, he also found himself in
search of the perfect sun protection. He never found the perfect wave, but he
decided to develop the perfect sunblock. Called BurnOut, it's a full-spectrum
(meaning it blocks both UVA and UVB rays), waterproof sunscreen that comes in
two SPFs - 18 and 32. Unlike some heavy-duty sunblocks, it's light and nongreasy,
and doesn't run under your goggles and burn your eyes, says open-water swimmer
Mary Lou DiNardo of New York. BurnOut also has a long-lasting high-SPF lip balm.

HITS THE BEACH! Play it safe in the sun this
summer with soothing tanning lotions, sunscreens and lip balms all blended with
our favorite oil! | |
Kevin
Dunn, an avid surfer and world traveler, has developed an intimate relationship
with the sun and suntan products in his travels. Only two years ago, he was convinced
that most sunscreen products were fraudulent. "I was fed up with their quality
and claims," he says. With
his environmental science degree from the University of California at Santa Cruz,
he decided to create his own sunscreen. Dunn discovered that that most products
use cheap oil for a base. Naturally, his quest for a good base oil led him to
hemp, which turned out to be the perfect additive for BurnOut, ocean tested, water-resistant
sunscreen lotions that offers SPFs of 18 and 32. Dunn
started an intensive marketing program and can safely claim that the response
to BurnOut as been "tremendously positive." He's proud that the hip,
new national makeup store Sephora in New York city is carrying his lotions.

BODY AND SOUL Saving

YOU'RE
AN IRISH, freckle-faced redhead who enjoys nothing more than hanging 10. What's
your most logical career move? For
Kevin Dunn, a UC-Santa Cruz and Leland High School graduate, the answer was right
under his nose, or - more accurately - in the sun block he's slathered all over
his schnozz for years. "My
nose was constantly peeling until I was 12 or 13," says Dunn, now 28. "I
got fed up with the sunscreens that are out there. They just don't work as good
as they should." Determined
to find a product that would last as long as a good day of surfing, Dunn, a former
environmental studies major, decided he would have to create his own concoction. The
result: "BurnOut," a new line of "ocean tested" sun block
launched in May - with a Santa Cruz twist. Each 5-ounce bottle of sunscreen is
loaded with moisturizing virgin hemp seed oil, which its maker says is non-toxic
and biodegradable. The
Santa Cruz-based company, Sun Research LLC., is marketing the cream to surfers,
snowboarders and mountain bikers, says Dunn. "We want to be the first sunscreen
product that's really hip and cool." Dunn
knows that would be no small feat. Growing up, he was less than thrilled when
his father -who suffered from skin cancer - made him put on sun block, he says.
And he recognizes that skin protection isn't always a priority among generations
X and Y. But that hasn't stopped him from peddling his product - $20 a tube with
SPF 32 - to fellow surfers more concerned with perfect waves than perfect skin. -Julie
